The Military Archives of Sweden

Welcome to the Military Archives, the part of the National Archives of Sweden concerned with agencies sorting under the Ministry of Defence. We keep archives dating from the 16th century until present times.

In our custody you will find listings and files over military personnel, drawings and descriptions of all sorts of military eqipment and buildings, maps from all over the world, private files of key persons in swedish military history, photographs and a lot more. In the year 2005 we were celebrating the foundation 200 years ago!

The rest of this website is all in swedish. Of special interest to non-swedish visitors are our collections of maps and plans. Many of the registers are published on this site and a lot of the material can be viewed online.

Fonds

The Military Archives keep records from agencies belonging to the Swedish Ministry of Defense and from individuals as well as associations connected to the military. The National Archival Database (NAD) contains information on the fonds of the Military Achives and very often inventories (container lists) which otherwise can be found in the Reference room. The material most often used in genealogical research is available on microfiche.

Maps and plans

Our special pride is the unique collection of handpainted maps and plans concerning many parts of the world but especially Sweden, Finland and Germany. Registers to our map collections, including some images, can be found at:
Kartor och ritningar (overview)
Geographical nameindex
Utländska kartor (Maps over foreign countries and cities). Please note that the registers yet are far from complete. Names of countries, cities etc reflects mainly the status of 1815.
